Events through the year at Gordon

List of events run by PAC and the school staff, with their approximate dates.

If the event is happening now or soon, there will be details on the home page of this website.

If the date is already known for the 2009-2010 school year, it is indicated. These events, and other important school dates, are in your school photo calendar.

Volunteer sheet sent home with every student, for parents/caregivers to indicate what events they would like to help out with.

 

One-Time Events in the School Year

Welcome BarBQ and Meet the teachers - An afternoon and evening BarBQ in September at the beginning of the school year. Meet your child's teacher over a BarBQ dinner.

Terry Fox run - In September the whole school participates in an annual run or walk.

Book fair - usually held during the parent/teacher conferences in October. Oct 14th and 15th 2009.

Halloween parade - on Oct 30th in 2009, students come to school in their Halloween costumes and parade through the school at the beginning of the day.

Winter fair and concert - Students perform in a winter concert in December before the holidays, organized by the music teacher. Students can make their own crafts sell them at the winter fair. PAC sells snacks and drinks. (December 10th 2009)

Santa's workshop - French Immersion parents sometimes collect small gifts, for students to buy and have gift wrapped for their families.

Holiday donations - In December, PAC collects food and gifts for families in need.

Jump rope for heart - Around Valentine's Day, staff often organize a jump rope marathon with students, and raise money for the heart and stroke foundation.

Talent show - Students audition with their talent, and put on an evening performance for parents.

Read-A-Thon - Spring
Traditionally has been in the Spring, to celebrate reading and to raise money for school books. In 2010, the ReadAThon event was cancelled, as parents had recently donated to other fundraisers.

French Immersion Fundraising Event - Springtime most years, French Immersion parents organize a Gala evening or raffle to raise money for French Immersion Cultural Field Trips.

Aboriginal Day - Spring
Celebration of Aboriginal culture for the day at school.

Spring Fling - In mid May, Gordon parents and staff organize a school and community fair outside on the school grounds. Lots of events, music, food and fun. (May 8th 2010, afternoon and early evening)

Sports Day - A school day in May entirely devoted to sports. Students participate in activities run by Kits High students. (May 21st 2010)

Kindergarten Orientation and Tea - a morning gathering to introduce new kindergarten families to Gordon. (June 2nd 2010)

Teachers appreciation lunch - parents prepare a lunch for teachers, in thanks for their work for the children. (June 2nd 2010)

Beach Day - at the end of the school year, the whole school walks to Jericho Beach for a day on the sand. (June 25th 2010)

 

Ongoing Events

Grocery card fundraiser - ongoing fundraiser.
Order forms usually due on the last Friday of the month.

PAC meetings - alternate last Monday or Tuesday of each month, except December and June. Held in the evening in the library. Babysitting by Grade 7 students. Dates for 2009-2010 are Monday Sept 28th, Tuesday Oct 27th, Monday Nov 30th, Monday Jan 25th, Tuesday Feb 23rd, Monday March 29th, Tuesday April 27th, Monday May 31st.

Popcorn sales - every Friday lunchtime

Clothes donations - at the end of each term, unclaimed lost and found clothes are donated to charity.

Recycling - ongoing. Drink containers - plastic, glass and metal bottles and cans - are collected for recycling by Go Green. The recycling center is in the basement.
