Under ActNowBC, the Ministry has regulated the sale of unhealthy food to kids at school. It is effective now in Elementary Schools, and starting Sept 2008 in Secondary Schools. In summary: Foods that are high in sweeteners, salt, fat, trans fat or calories relative to their nutritional value, cannot be sold to students at school (e.g. food where sugar is the first ingredient, or drinks where sugar is the second ingredient after water). Foods that are nutritious but moderately salted, sweetened, or processed can account for up to 50% fo total food and drinks sold at school (e.g. yogurts and fruit bars where sugar is not a primary ingredient). Foods that are high in nutrients, the lowest in healthy components, and the least processed must account for 50% or more of the food sold at school (e.g. whole grain bread and fresh vegetables).
It does not affect food brought from home. |
