Volunteer

Gordon benefits from a strong parent volunteer involvement!

Volunteer sign-up sheet, sent to parents and guardians of Gordon students at the beginning of the school year.

PAC Roles booklet describes each event and job of PAC at Gordon. This document will change as parents get involved in different Gordon events over the years.

Research has shown that involvement of parents in their child's education results in direct benefits for the child, the parents and the school. By working together and creating a mutually respectful environment, parents and staff can maximize educational and social benefits for our students. We truly value your contribution.

There are a myriad of ways you can get involved in your child's school and/or classroom. Sign up on the sheet sent out, or for events posted on the school bulletin board throughout the year.
If you have an interest or skill that you would like to bring to the school, maybe as a demonstration or club, or collaboration with a teacher, please contact the PAC Chair or the Principal.

Here are some of the volunteer opportunities:

Class Rep

The class rep makes a contact list of all the parents in their child's class. They forward messages from the teacher to all parents, and also between parents. Some class reps set up a blog for their child's class.

Library Helper

Our librarian, Mary Locke, greatly appreciates parents that can commit some time regularly to help her with library maintenance. Please talk to Mary directly.

Popcorn Sales Helper

On a typical Friday during lunch, PAC volunteers sell freshly-popped popcorn in the basement. This takes about an hour to do and includes setting up and dispensing popcorn from a commercial-grade popcorn machine. PAC will post a sign-up sheet in the main hallway bulletin board or contact PAC by email to set up a schedule.

Recycling

While the school board recycles the paper in the school, PAC recycles drink containers. Parents are needed to help run this program, which involves keeping the area tidy and bagging the items for pick up by Go Green 3 times a year.

Safe Arrival Program

The Safe Arrival Program, as its name suggests, has been set up by volunteer parents each morning to ensure that your child arrives safely at school. If you are able to volunteer your help with this program, please contact our PAC chairperson.

School Garden Care - "Greening Committee"

The school grounds were transformed to green areas several years ago, through the work of Gordon Greening Committee, the VSB Grounds Department, and the surrounding community. The butterfly garden, new lawns, trees and shade garden are now much appreciated as learning and recreational resources. The parents now maintain the area, and are always looking for help with maintaining and adding new plantings. With the anticipated seismic upgrade to our school, a greening group can play a large part in developing new green areas around the school building. Contact PAC if you would like to help with school garden care.

Serving Food and Running a BarBQ

Several times a year, PAC serve snacks, or run a BarBQ for school events. Parents are always needed to help out. The events are: the Welcome BarBQ, Winter Craft Fair snacks and Spring Fling. Please contact the PAC Chair.
